Donald Trump, now 78, hasn’t attended the Met Gala since 2012—and while many have speculated why, a moment from 2017 seems to offer the clearest explanation yet.
Before he entered politics, Trump was a regular at the event, often seen alongside Melania in classic black tuxedos and elegant gowns. In fact, the Met Gala holds special significance for the couple—it’s where he proposed to her in 2005 with a stunning $2 million diamond ring.
But his absence in recent years has raised eyebrows, especially after Anna Wintour, the powerful editor-in-chief of Vogue and gatekeeper of the Met Gala guest list, made a revealing comment on The Late Late Show with James Corden back in 2017.
When asked if there was anyone she would never invite back, she didn’t hesitate: “Trump.”
That single word sparked speculation that she had effectively banned him from the event. And as the 2025 Met Gala came and went, old rumors resurfaced online—along with plenty of opinions.
Some fans found humor in the situation, noting how Vice President Kamala Harris attended this year while Trump remains uninvited. Others voiced support for Wintour’s decision, saying, “They have standards,” or joking, “He’s probably seething… good!”
Still, some pointed out that Trump likely wouldn’t have gone anyway, writing, “Why would he go?” Meanwhile, longtime observers noted that Trump and Melania were once gala regulars, even reminiscing about their glamorous red carpet appearances together.
Critics also took the opportunity to question Wintour’s influence these days, suggesting that her decisions may not carry the weight they once did in today’s evolving fashion world.
Regardless of the politics or personalities involved, one thing is clear: the Met Gala, once a place of celebration for the Trumps, no longer has a seat for him.
